My new eyes

Every once in a while you need to pretend that it is the first time you have looked at your site. Pretend that you know nothing about it. Then read through it and see if it all is clear and smooth. After several people have told me they just don't understand what TopSurfer.com is all about I decided to look at it with new eyes. As I logged into the member's area, I realized that someone new to the whole advertising arena, would have no idea what to do next. So I am in the process of making it more clear what to do and where to go. I have found that a lot of people get overwhelmed with everything TopSurfer has to advertise your sites. So I will be making some changes. Hopefully those people that are used to the old TopSurfer will like the changes and be able to find their way around. And everyone new will not be confused nor overwhelmed. Wish me luck :)

It's your job!

How much time each week do you spend promoting your site(s)? Most people start off really strong then fade out when they don't get instant results. Did you know that the average "brick and mortar business" (which means a business with an actual store front) usually takes 2 years before they are in profit? The average store doesn't last a year, because the average store owner assumes that they will be different from every other business out there and that they will be making huge amounts of money in weeks or months. But the businesses that stick with it may finally come out on top. There is a saying "If you see someone on top of a mountain, don't assume he fell there." So if you want to reach the top don't expect to fall there. It takes time, energy, self discipline and hope. You get out of it what you put into it. So if you really want to succeed, then treat this like your job. And work as if you are trying to impress the boss so that you can get a raise. Turn the TV off for an extra hour each day and promote the heck out of that site of yours. Remind yourself often why you have your site and what you hoped to accomplish. Then work, work, work. It's your job (literally)!

Does the site look professional?

You would be surprised at how many websites just don't look professional or act professional. I have had people submit a website to TopSurfer.com and tell me that they haven't been getting any results. So I took a look at their site and see that it is very unprofessional looking. There was no clear design to the page, just information. Colors miss-matched, etc.
Trust is a big issue on the internet. I don't just mean the trust that we all need to have to know that we are not being scammed. But believing in the people to run the site the proper way. The site should be clean, orderly and professional looking so that people will trust it to do what it is saying it will do.
Which leads to a separate point but on the same page... Communications. Always try to respond to questions as fast as you can. This makes your website seem very professional. Also, differences and problems are bound to occur, but can be resolved in a polite professional manner. Sometimes people get frustrated and may write you an email that seems a little rude. The great thing about emails is that they give you time choose your words wisely. Being polite, helpful and professional to someone who is a little frustrated and rude will often diffuse the situation.

Does it appeal to everyone, or at least the majority?

This may seem obvious but it really needs to be said.
Who does your website appeal to?
Is it just for women? For men? Is it for techie people?
The more people that your site appeals to the greater the odds are that you will sell your product/service from your site.

Now, if it appeals to everyone do you have a niche?
Or do you stand out from the competition some how?
What do you offer that they don't?
